Finish carpentry built to your rooms
Carpentry services in Bozeman mostly mean finish work: built-in shelves on a blank wall, a mudroom bench with hooks and cubbies for boots and ski gear, wood treads in place of worn stair carpet, or new trim in a room that only ever had the builder's plain casing. Our craftsmen measure in place, build to the room rather than to a catalog size, and scribe the last pieces to walls that are rarely as straight as the plans say. The work is done by background-checked craftsmen and guaranteed in writing for one year. Call (800) 884-2639 to start.
Much of Bozeman was built from the 1990s onward, and a lot of those homes have exactly the trim package the builder chose and nothing more: narrow casing, plain baseboard, carpeted stairs and wire shelving. Painted built-ins, wider casings and real wood stair treads change how those rooms feel without the cost of a remodel. Older houses near downtown, in the Bon Ton and South Willson districts and the Northeast neighborhood, have the opposite need: original trim and doors worth repairing and matching rather than tearing out.
Bozeman's dry winter air is hard on woodwork. Wood shrinks once the heat is on, so miters open, joints show gaps and stair parts loosen. Outside, intense sun at altitude and months of snow break down fascia, window trim and porch columns faster than you might expect.
What we build
Carpentry projects
Built-in shelves and cabinets
Library walls, window seats, pantry cabinets, media walls and niches, painted or stained to match the room.
Mudroom benches and lockers
Benches, cubbies, hooks and boot storage sized for snow gear, skis and the coats a Bozeman winter calls for.
Stair treads and railings
Carpeted stairs converted to wood treads with painted risers, loose balusters replaced, and new handrails added.
Barn doors and interior doors
Sliding barn doors on track hardware, new prehung doors, and old doors trimmed and rehung so they close and latch.
Crown, casing and wainscoting
Crown, baseboard, window casing, board and batten and picture-frame molding installed with coped corners and tight miters.
Exterior trim
Weathered fascia, window trim, soffits and porch column wraps replaced, including low-maintenance PVC trim where wood keeps failing.

Signs it is time
When trim and woodwork need attention
Gaps at corners and joints
Open miters and gaps between trim and wall usually come from wood shrinking in dry winter air. Resetting, gluing and recaulking the trim closes them.
Weathered or soft exterior trim
If paint has peeled off fascia or window trim and a screwdriver sinks into the wood, water is getting behind it.
Loose stair parts
Balusters that rattle or a handrail that moves are a safety issue, especially on stairs used every day.
Doors that will not latch
A door that has to be pushed or lifted to latch has usually sagged on its hinges or shifted with the season, and can almost always be fixed.

Materials
Paint-grade, stain-grade or PVC
Paint-grade wood and MDF
The usual choice for painted built-ins and trim. MDF stays flat and takes paint smoothly, while poplar holds up better where it will get knocked, as in a mudroom.
Stain-grade hardwood
Oak, maple and other hardwoods for stained built-ins, stair treads and handrails that should show the grain.
PVC trim
For exterior trim that keeps failing under sun and snow. It does not absorb water, takes paint well, and holds up where wood weathers fast.
Cost
What affects the cost of carpentry
Size and complexity
A single niche costs far less than a wall of built-ins with doors, drawers and lighting.
Materials
Paint-grade materials cost less than stain-grade hardwood, and custom profiles cost more than stock trim.
Finishing
Prime and paint or stain adds time, but it means the project is finished rather than handed to a second contractor.
Condition of the walls
Very uneven walls and floors, common in older homes, take more scribing and shimming to get a tight fit.
